Day 1 & 2

9th and 10th of February

Hello all, 

We are glad to let you know that we have arrived safely on our journey to Kolkata. We had a long first day. When we got off the flight we were warmly greeted by the brothers who picked us up from the airport. The culture shock hit us immediately when we were passing the sellers on our bus ride chopping off the heads of chickens! We settled into our new home for the next ten days very quickly and had a short nap to keep us going. Later on in the day we wandered into the city to experience the busy atmosphere of the city. We got to familiarise ourselves with the metro system in the city, safe to say it was a very tight squish on the metro... After our eventful trip to the city, we had dinner and took a well needed early night.

After a good night's sleep, we all got up and got ready for our day. We had a selection of teas and juices and toast to start the day off. We gathered our supplies and carried them from St.Mary's (Our accommodation) to the metro and the walked to St.George's Day School. We were met with a friendly greeting from the Principal, Brother Joel, and we were shown to the classroom. The students were all so welcoming and kind. We worked with them throughout the day, helping them with school work and teaching the children their final class. All of the children was super appreciative of our time in the classroom, we had so much fun playing games with them all at their lunch break. We had a lovely lunch over in St. Josephs school then headed back to St. Marys after a quick game of  basketball. We then met Brother Franco who showed us his jewelry that he made and told us that we could assist in his class after school the following day. Rhóinn treated us to a lovely tune on his violin. We then journeyed back on the busy metro to St Mary and met the others who had been over in the Mary Rice Center for the day. We ended the evening with dinner and a lovely reflection followed by cake bought by Ms. Kinsella's group who went for a short walk this evening as they had stayed in St. Mary's all day. We really enjoyed our day, and we will update you on our next adventures tomorrow. A big thank you to Ms. Hickey who has been lighting her candle for us all, we hope all our families have been lighting theirs also, we will be inspecting them on our return!     Hi guys, it’s Ms Somerville here. Please excuse my username … I think I made this ‘Blogger’ account back in 2009!
    This was so lovely to read and the photos really brought me back to being with the wonderful community in St Mary’s and St George’s that we were lucky to meet in 2023. Please say hello to Brother Franco- I hope he has a few Irish tinwhistle tunes ready for you!!
    I hope you are minding each other and embracing everything in true HCK spirit. Some of the staff gathered today to think of all of you. <3

    Greetings from the Fifth Year RE class. We are missing you lots. School is much quieter without you and the locker area is definitely tidier! We love the blog and photos, keep the photos coming. It looks like a great experience for you and the pupils in St. George's, and the classes look very happy having you working with them. The creative and colourful St. Brigid’s crosses look great and we think you are definitely living the words of Cornelia with your 'bright and joyful spirit' showing in every photo. The pastries look delicious and the blog is so interesting. We are thinking of you all, keep up the good work and we can't wait to welcome you back.

Day 8 16/02/25

 Hello all, this morning we got off to an early start with a wake up call of 4:00am! Unfortunately, our bus was supposed to arrive at 4:30 but did not arrive until 5:30 ('Indian Stretch Time'). Eventually we arrived at the Mother House which is where St. Mother Theresa founded her congregation and is buried. We got to enjoy a lovely mass alongside many of the sisters in this congregation as well as other visitors such as groups from the HOPE foundation and another school in Dublin. We all found it very special and enjoyed seeing her tomb.  When we returned to St. Marys, we all headed for a much needed nap. Then, we ate toast and hopped on a metro into the markets. After a long look around the areas, involving being followed by many men trying to sell us their goods, we eventually found a lovely indoor market and were able to buy some lovely jewellery and phone cases!  After a long day of shopping, it was essential for us to stop by our favourite coffee shop in Kolkata, Fl...

Day 10 - 18/2

Unfortunately it has come to the final day of our Immersion Programme. We are devestated to be finishing this Immersion Programme, however we have really bonded as a group and have learned so much from our time here which has definitely changed our perspective on life.  To start off with the day, we did our morning routine as per (no need to go into detail by now...), and we set off on the metro, arriving to St. Georges.  As it was our final day we all went to the school together, instead of St. Marys. We began our first class by making shamrocks out of card which the kids really loved, followed by teaching them the classic Dreolin dance.  We held a very competitive contest between the girls and the boys in which the girls won! Next we went on break with class 4 which was lovely as we got to spend some time with them before we headed off the following morning. We played baskebtall, tag, badminton and various other games.
